This Kun Lu Shan Raw Pu’er Tea Cake is made exclusively from ancient arbor tea trees aged between 100 and 300 years, harvested in late March 2014. These venerable trees grow in the Kun Lu Shan (昆麓山) region—an area rich in history, biodiversity, and high-altitude terroir—producing tea leaves of exceptional complexity and energy.

Located 31 kilometers north of Pu’er City in Yunnan Province, Kun Lu Shan forms part of the Wuliangshan mountain range and falls under the administration of Kuan Hong Village, Lin’er Township, in the Lahu and Yi Autonomous County. The mountain stretches over 10 kilometers north to south, with elevations ranging from 1,410 to 2,271 meters above sea level. This elevation, coupled with deep forest coverage and mineral-rich soil, creates the ideal environment for producing high-grade pu’er tea with remarkable depth and structure.

The region is home to one of Yunnan’s most impressive ancient tea ecosystems, with an estimated 10,122 mu (about 675 hectares) of ancient tea gardens. Among them, 1,939 mu (129 hectares) of semi-wild, old-growth tea trees thrive in a largely untouched primeval forest, mainly surrounding Fengyang and Baxiang Villages. These gardens are thought to include royal tea plantations dating back to the Qing Dynasty, giving the region a deep cultural and historical significance.

Revered as a “living museum of tea trees”, Kun Lu Shan hosts what’s believed to be the largest known cultivated tea tree: the No. 3 Ancient Tea Tree, standing approximately 25 meters tall with a 2.53-meter diameter trunk. This legendary tree stands as a symbol of the region’s rich tea heritage and ecological integrity.

Tea from Kun Lu Shan is known for its thick, powerful mouthfeel, complex bitterness, and a prolonged returning sweetness (hui gan) that lingers. The liquor is clear and bright, with a bold floral and slightly woody aroma. The cha qi (茶气)—or tea energy—is especially pronounced, offering a calming yet focused sensation that experienced pu’er drinkers will appreciate.

Whether you’re a collector, connoisseur, or simply looking to experience an authentically powerful and well-aged raw pu’er, this 2014 Kun Lu Shan cake offers both drinking enjoyment and long-term aging potential.
