Bánh Bạch Trà Rừng Hoàng Liên Sơn

Harvest Location: Hoàng Liên Sơn, Bản Bo, Lầu Chải Việt Nam

Harvest Date: 2023 - Autumn

Cultivar: Shan Tuyet

Elevation: 2100 meters

Harvested from the remote highlands of Vietnam's Hoàng Liên Sơn Mountains, this wild Shan Tuyet white tea comes from one of the most important tea-growing regions in Southeast Asia. Stretching across the provinces of Lào Cai, Lai Châu, and Yên Bái, The region's rugged terrain, dramatic elevation changes, and isolation have helped preserve extensive forests of ancient tea trees that continue to grow in a largely natural environment.

At elevations around 2,100 meters, the tea trees experience cool temperatures year-round, frequent cloud cover, heavy mountain mists, and significant day-to-night temperature fluctuations. These conditions slow the growth of the leaves, allowing aromatic compounds, amino acids, and sugars to develop gradually. The result is tea with exceptional depth, sweetness, and complexity.

Unlike plantation-grown tea, these Shan Tuyet trees grow scattered throughout mixed mountain forests among native hardwoods, bamboo, mosses, ferns, and medicinal plants. Many of the trees are naturally seed-propagated and have adapted to their environment over generations. Their trunks and branches are often covered in thick layers of lichen, moss, and epiphytic growth, a testament to the region's clean air, abundant moisture, and ecological richness. The name Shan Tuyet, meaning "Mountain Snow," refers to the fine silvery hairs that cover the young buds and leaves, giving them a snow-dusted appearance.

Each cake is crafted from leaves gathered from numerous wild trees growing throughout this high-altitude ecosystem. Rather than expressing a single garden or cultivar selection, the tea reflects the broader character of the Hoàng Liên Sơn Mountains themselves—a landscape shaped by altitude, ancient forests, and generations of traditional harvesting by local ethnic communities.

In the cup, the tea opens with delicate alpine florals, fresh mountain herbs, and a clear honeyed sweetness. As the session progresses, layers of wildflower nectar, pine resin, cooling mint, and soft forest notes emerge. The texture is smooth and silky, supported by a lingering mineral finish that speaks to its mountain origin. Beyond flavor and aroma, the tea carries a calming, grounding qi that unfolds gradually, echoing the quiet stillness of the high forests from which it was harvested.

Bright and expressive in its youth, yet possessing the structure and depth to age gracefully for many years, this wild Shan Tuyet white tea offers a compelling glimpse into one of Vietnam's most remarkable tea landscapes.
